I have played both ways, I do greatly prefer to the modern controls. The only visual problem has a setting to be fixed in GZ anyway. Also, most mods especially recent ones are made for modern controls in mind. I usually forget I can jump unless the mod has platforming like the golden souls trilogy.

I prefer to play doom the way the maps were designed for. If the map was designed well around the limitations of autoaim, I'll play with autoaim. If a map was designed around freelook, I'll play with freelook. Maps need to be designed and played with their intended behaviors and compatibilities. Maps like MAP30 Icon of Sin are totally broken with freelook because it was designed with the autoaim limitations in mind, so I just don't play Doom 1 and 2 with freelook. Now *pistol start* is something I can split from vanilla. I actually find Doom 1 and 2 far more enjoyable with pistol start and the levels seem practically designed for it. It makes doom much more challenging but still balanced. The boss fights from Doom 1 are also WAY better.

I come from the future, and after a day of searching on forums and modifying my computer's files, I can tell you, DO NOT DOWNLOAD VIRTUALMIDISYNTH THAT THING MESSED UP MY LAPTOP. Only like another 2 people share my problem, but in a short story, it deleted the soundfont folder from my computer and I am trying to manually fix it. I can tell the long story if anyone wants to hear it.

I made my own pistol replacement for a wad I'm making, the gun is based off the TP82 Cosmonaut survival shotgun It's basically a backup 3 round burst shotgun that's weaker but uses pistol rounds, and has a fairly slow reload

I think 2d myth comes not from litetally implying dimension of Doom, but how it feels. Doom 1 feels very flat, and if you think otherwise, look at Doom 2: levels feel much more variable, city levels alone show it better. Jumps, elevators, skyscrapper became more common. Heretic and Hexen doesn't feel 2d a lot with fixed z-axis for objects, flying, looking up and down, and even jumps and polyobjects Doom 1, while compared to this, FEELS 2D: levels are not as complex especially when it comes to height, objects heights are buggy, and you can't even look up or down or normally jump and crouch, which is somewhat similiar to Wolf3D

At 5:38 , it looks like the pain elemental's death animation is different. In the final game, you can see the eyes/faces of the last souls he emits upon death, but it looks like they just referenced a regular explosion graphic for this. It seems at this point they weren't considering him spawning lost souls yet.

Okay, I _hear_ you, I _understand_ you, I even agree with you, counterpoint: any official Wiki site outside of Fandom (because Doom isn't the only one to split) burn my fucking eyes because not a single one has a dark mode to my knowledge. As bad as Fandom is, it comes with a dark mode every time. Granted, it's a moot point if it's already bright out, but c'mon, Light Mode is a fucking flashbang anywhere.
